Enter Your Solstice Dream for Peace Here:
At the Light in The Dark peace festival, after the dance at Studio for the Healing Arts, we set out intentions to dream peace.
This is my dream from 12/21 or 22 early a.m. ’07. First. Before telling it, some background. I had recently moved—about a month earlier—out of a place where I had a very difficult landlady, someone who was mean to me in ways that were not only passive-aggressive and strange, but which actually took planning and insight to be as psychologically abusive and unkind as she was. She was also rageful and bitter, and one day I had seen her irrational rage and discovered that this was an aspect of my own soul, having been treated with rage and cruelty as a child, that I had needed to face as an adult, to heal with compassion while still defending and protecting myself. I was reading a book by the Dalia Lama during my time in her property that helped me get through, if not with perfect compassion or grace, better than I might have otherwise. This landlady was a dog breeder and dog trainer. Although her dogs were well behaved, I am simply not a “dog person”.
I will call this dream “Kindness to an Enemy”
Dream: I am sleeping in a guest bedroom and I let my landlady’s son’s unattractive and annoying dog sleep at the foot of my bed. I know the dog needs care. In the morning I walk the dog; I am doing this for her. I know it matters to her, that the dog is walked. In the park where I walk the dog, many people are quietly walking dogs. A lot of them look like the dogs she breeds and shows. This looks sort of ceremonial, it is silent and formal and the people and leashed dogs move through a soft white fog in a park. I sense that all these people are serving by walking these dogs.
My thoughts: The Dalai Lama in How to Expand Love reminds the reader that all of us, friends, neutral persons, and enemies, want happiness and want to avoid suffering. The dogs, to me, are the ways they go about it that are not the way I would go about it. Walking the dog is service towards all of us moving together, towards less suffering, more happiness. I am not saying this as well as the dream did.
