Celebration of UN Day of Peace in
Adelaide, South Australia,
September 21
Dear All
Firstly the Management Committee of the GFS Peace Trust would like to invite you
to the United Nations International Day Commemoration to be held on September
21. This event has been organised in collaboration with the Psychologists for
Peace. Please see attachment for invitation details.
Here is some information about UN International
Day of Peace:
"The International Day of Peace was established
in 1981 by a resolution of the UN General Assembly. The resolution recalled that
the promotion of peace, both at international and national levels, is among the
main purposes of the United Nations. In 2001 resolution was strengthened to fix
the date annually on 21 September and for it to be a day of non violence and
cease fire."
Secondly the Trust is sharing a stall with the Psychologists for Peace and the
Medical Association for the Prevention of War on September 17 at the Peace One
Day Festival in Light Square from 11am onwards.
Please can anyone help on the stall for an hour
or two from 11am to dusk? This would be much appreciated. Also can anyone help
with providing information about how the Trust can borrow light, portable pin
up/display board/s? We need this urgently for the stall. Please e-mail me if you
can on
ebertsmith@gotalk.net.au
Thirdly a new program:
NEW RADIO PROGRAM:
"A PEACE OF THE ACTION"
On Radio Adelaide 101.5 FM for a half hour every week . It will be connecting
the peaces, exploring the common threads that compel people to act out against
injustice. The program will respond to issues as they break as well as
addressing perennial problems such as racism, colonialism, and environmental
degradation.
From September 3rd, 12.30pm Sundays
Looking forward to seeing you.

Tidewater Peace Alliance Celebration of
UN Day of Peace Scheduled
The
Tidewater Peace Alliance recently decided to develop a local celebration in
support of the official UN designated Day of Peace on Sept 21, when all member
nations are asked to enforce ceasefires and halt hostilities for 24 hours. There
will be corresponding peace actions globally. This actual Sept 21st event has
only been in existence since 2001, when an English actor named Jeremy Gilley
went on an amazing sojourn to persuade the UN to adopt this formal date and
seriously endorse it, because prior to Gilley's efforts the peace day concept
was a sort of floating holiday with no punch. And Gilley's idea is one day
devoted to peace achieved, 364 to go.
So what has transpired thus far locally is this: We have decided on a
nondenominational, interfaith religious activity and made inquiries to the
Unitarian Church on the Hague. They have granted us two hours, from about 6 to 8
PM on Thursday the 21st for a Peace Service, after which we will all troop out
of the church and hold a Candlelight vigil on the Hague, perhaps even marching
up toward Christ & St. Luke's at the other end of the Hague. The particulars of
this service are still being sketched in. The service will incorporate prayer,
speeches, an interpretive dance by Avanha, and some congregational hymns, chants
or songs at this point.
Our concept of the service will include representatives of different faiths
giving short speeches or prayers or some other spiritual expression to invoke
world peace as time and numbers permit. It is possible that as organizing for
this event grows, we will need to have a meeting or two of the main participants
to develop an inclusive and effective service.
The official cosponsors thus far are the Tidewater Peace Alliance (as an
umbrella organization), the Naro Cinema, the Studio for the Healing Arts, My
Yoga Spirit, the World Dreams Peace Bridge, the Rev. David R. Hackett of Christ
and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, The Hampton Roads Peace & Justice Center, the
Hampton Roads Independent Media Coalition and local members of Veterans for
Peace, with an endorsement by the organizers of Hampton Roads Earthdance on Sept
16, another peace event. We are also in contact with quite a few other groups at
this time and are awaiting their reply. Rev. Boothby of the Unitarian Church
will also be participating as well as Rabbi Zoberman of the Beth Chaverim
Synagogue. And several Buddhist organizations, the Norfolk Catholic Workers and
the Hampton Roads Network for Non-violence are expressing interest.
